Wedding Dress Colors 101

What Colors are There?

What do they look like? And which one is for me?

One of the first things we mention to brides when color is a concern is that we don’t carry white. For clarity’s sake, the white that most people think of is purest of white colors as Bright White. Bright White has a blue undertone, which is what gives it such crispness. It also causes a blue hue in photographs so be aware of that.

Knowing the difference between white, ivory and other gown colors will make your shopping experience easier.  So we’re going to break it down for you!Let’s keep it simple and break it into 4 categories: Ivory Family, Blush Family, Nude Family, Adventurous Colors.

**note: Bright White is not in any of these families, it is a family all its own and we do not carry these gowns at Bitsy Bridal.

Ivory Family

Ivory is a “catch-all” color. Anything that is white or off-white to the naked eye but isn’t actually white.  Most often, ivory will have a warm undertone of yellow or brown which is what makes it so much more appealing than Bright White.

Other names that designers will use for their ivory gowns include: natural, off white, soft white, beige. Some designers will have a dress available in ivory and beige – both are versions of ivory just with different undertones or in a darker/lighter shade. These photos feature gowns by Christos and Alyne by Rita Vinieris.

Blush Family

Technically, blush is the lightest of pinks- almost undetectable and very light. But lately blush tends to describe any dress that looks pink. There are a numerous color names for various shades that really just boil down to being called blush.

Many people are afraid that blush doesn’t look “as bridal” as something from the nude or ivory family, but rest assured it photographs beautifully and is a fantastic way to make a statement while still being a bride! Check out our recent post featuring the color blush! In these photos we’re featuring (from the top down) Sareh Nouri, Tara Keely, and Saphia Blue.

Nude Family

Within the nude family we have Mocha, Champagne, Nude, Cashmere, and Cafe. Essentially these all have a brown or tan tone to them. Similar to ivory but much more saturated so there is no way they can be considered “off-white”.

Kristina Curtis
Brooke Bakken
Duke Moose

Cashmere, Mocha, and Cafe are essentially the same color just different names used by different designers. This color is a bit darker than  Champagne but still holds on to the soft “milky” quality. Nude is the darkest and is meant to look like tanned skin.  We showcased the first photo in a post here, the second gown is one our favorite Tara Keely gowns, and of course Lazaro brings up the rear with his dazzling piece that we took up to Park City.

Adventurous Colors

These are gowns that are anything but ordinary! From black, to lavender, to gold and grey, and the now trendy blue! These colors will really make a bride stand apart from the crowd without looking like she is going to the prom!

My current favorite is our beautiful Star by Kelly Faetenini! Grey and blue are hot colors for bridal right now, so if you’re a bride with a bold side come and try on our Star! The other gowns showcased in this post are also by Kelly Faetenini and Sareh Nouri  who are a part of our exclusive collection.

Hopefully this helped break down the confusing world of bridal fabric colors. Don’t forget to check back with us for more info to help your bridal experience! If you want to make an appointment to try on some gorgeous gowns of all colors call us or make an appointment online!

Before I dive in can we all just take a second to admit that Halo is the best name for a gown EVER. Its ridiculously adorable.  Okay, thanks.

Halo is the second arrival from Blush by Hayley Paige.

I will admit, I was against ordering this gown at first. I wanted a different one. But now that it is here, I am happily eating crow because it is so painfully perfect. My absolute favorite part is the back. I’m a sucker for a pretty back on a gown. If you think it’s gorgeous in the pictures, you have to see it in person.

The Skinny

Silhouette:  Ball Gown

Design:  Lace bodice, tiered tulle skirt with horse hair trim

The guipure lace  on the bodice is light but a bit chunky which is a nice contrast to the soft tulle skirt.

The skirt is made of several layers of tulle which gives it body without adding weight or bulk making the gown very ethereal and easy to manage.

Neckline: Scalloped v-neck

A beautiful twist on a standard v-neck a scalloped neckline is much more whimsical.

Straps: Spaghetti

Back: Low open back with strap detail

Color:  Ivory with nude underlay (also available in solid ivory)

Shine Level: 0

The draw for Halo is the cut and finish of the fabric, not added beading or

Boho Level:  3

Hayley Paige is known for her exquisite ball gowns. Halo is no exception.  It will fit perfectly in many settings both indoor and outdoor. It is very much a warm weather gown but if you love the design, you could customize it by adding sleeves and it would work just as well.

We are so excited to have these Blush by Hayley Paige gowns trickling in! They are simply gorgeous and make beautiful additions to our carefully picked selection of gowns.

Until next time,

We have been looking forward to this for weeks, pouring over dress pictures and painstakingly picking the gowns we think you will love the most.

The gowns will be coming in one at a time over the next weeks and months so we are introducing them as they arrive. First on the list is this little number: her name is West.

Shine level:  4/5

Boho level: 3/5

How can you not love this? Seriously.

But for real, if you had an answer for that question, just go away… I’ll wait.

That’s right, it’s AMAZING. Say it with me now…. Marrakesh Beading……. from top to bottom!

With the stellar fit,  low back and the perfect amount of sparkle, I’m not sure how Miss Hayley Paige could have improved upon this design.

West is a phenomenal design. Not just because she is drop-dead gorgeous but because she is such a universal design. She appeals to the “princess” brides who are looking for drama, sparkle, and a little more drama.  She also has such strong bohemian elements with the off white coloring and abstract beading that trendy brides are losing it!  West is perfect because she walks the line between classic and bold.

As for me, my favorite part of the entire gown is the cut. I love the neckline, where it hits the legs to flare out into a perfectly rounded skirt, and most of all I love that back. I am a sucker for a low-back gown. But for real, who isn’t?

5 Best Things About Tara Keely Fall 2017

Hello Gorgeous!

In May, we were lucky enough to host a trunk show for one of the favorite bridal lines among stylists and Bitsy Brides: Tara Keely.  Part of the JLM design house and designed by Lazaro Perez, Tara Keely is for the sophisticated and timeless bride who is not afraid to make a statement.

The new season is To. Die. For.  The girls here were literally drooling over the newest designs. The official pictures are not out yet but I just couldn’t wait to give you a taste so…. without further ado…. here are five things to expect from the new season of Tara Keely.

1- Sleeves

Sleeves were a rare luxury among bridal designers over the past several years but they have been making a comeback in the most recent seasons. In my opinion, the JLM design house (which includes Tara Keely) does sleeves better than most. You will find dainty cap sleeves and long, lace, masterpiece sleeves in the newest collection.

2 – Sparkle

If you thought it was impossible to have a sparkled dress without looking like a chandelier or like a 4 year old playing dress up then you have never tried on a gown designed by Lazaro Perez. With cascading waves of sparkle and perfectly placed belts or jewels, each dress with the addition of shine is made with the utmost regard for taste and sophistication.

3 – A-Line Perfection

There is a reason it is the most requested silhouette. ALine gowns flatter nearly every body type. They are feminine and elegant without being hard to manage or overdone. A Line is classic and gives you a lot of wiggle room to show your personality with the gown design, which is exactly what happens with a Tara Keely gown. With a design channeling Princess Diana hanging next to a bohemian beauty, there is a gown for everyone in this collection.

4 – Lush Materials

Tara Keely always has amazing fabrics and finishes but this season is particularly spectacular. I am in love with the use of Silk Shantung I am finding.  Shantung is an amazing material with just enough luster and the perfect amount of drape to easily be worn in a formal or whimsical affair.

5 – Bohemian Charm

I am particularly critical of boho-style dresses. Just not my favorite. I will however have to admit that I am drooling over Tara Keely’s bohemian additions to this season.

Get ready ladies, this season is going to be AMAZING!

Until next time,
